Mama I (Left)
By Trixie Tan
My work is inspired by my mother’s garden. My mom’s garden faded away as she passed. But a pot of orchid survived and was blooming unattended. She passed away due to uterine cancer. I find it ironic that the part of human body that creates life can be the what also took it away. Now, I pay more attention to the change of human body, and its complexity of has inspired me in the production of this series. How a tiny organ can play in important role in shaping human life. However, I’m not emphasizing the end of life but exploring life at its finest.
Especially at this moment when I have youth, maturity and beauty combined. Human organs are like jigsaw puzzles, joining together piece by piece for to create a bigger picture.

Blooms In Red
By Lim Yong Wei
In ‘Blooms in Red’, I explore the traditional symbolism of prosperity in Asian culture, particularly through the vibrant hues of gold and red. Drawing inspiration from Japanese customs like wearing kimonos during celebrations such as the New Year and weddings, I infuse bright red tones with blooming peonies and floral motif. Through this artwork, I aim to evoke a sense of renewal, joy and good fortune, bringing in the spirit of New year with optimism and happiness.

Lights
By Lim Yong Wei
This painting, created with the idea of “the beginning of a new year” reflects the aspirations, hopes, and dreams that people often associate with this time. Especially the idea of praying deeply resonates with Asian culture, and this cultural context has inspired the creation of this artwork. Although I wouldn’t consider myself a devoted religious individual, the concept of prayer has a unique fascination for me. The serene maiko present a calming emotion, evoking a deep sense of serenity and contemplation. It taps into the innate human yearning for connection, introspection, and hope. As I immerse myself in the process of working on this painting, it serves to me as a reminder of the strength found in faith and the potential for spiritual growth. We need to remember that even in the darkest moments, light can shine the brightest.

Serenade of Bamboo
By Lim Yong Wei
In ‘Serenade of Bamboo,’ I dive into the rich symbolism of bamboo found in both Chinese and Japanese cultures, representing concepts such as longevity, good luck, and resilience. Through a strategic use of color play, I use orange and blue as complementary hues to create a visually captivating effect. While the navy blue adds depth, the fiery orange and serene yellows imbue the scene with warmth and hope, illuminating the surroundings. Against this backdrop, the bamboo leaves sway gracefully, evoking a sense of melody that wards off malevolent forces and purifies the environment. The figure depicted gains strength and resilience from this harmonious interplay, embodying the ability to overcome adversity with grace and courage.

Dialogue Between Objects
By Onnzai Thong
This artwork blends different materials and settings, incorporating photos into boxes. Inspired by my apartment block, the photos show people and their surroundings, capturing how things change over time. The idea is to show that every place, like streets or parks, holds people’s stories. Through this collage, I want to capture real signs of people living here, showing that our surroundings are full of memories and experiences.

Exploiting Alley
By Onnzai Thong
I use spatial cues to depict the tight compression of time and space, drawing inspiration from my own experiences throughout different times of day and night. Specifically, I explore the dynamic relationship between people and their surroundings. By blending two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms, I create unexpected visual outcomes and develop new narratives. I aim to redefine the familiar into the unfamiliar, transitioning from representational to non-representational forms. Through this exploration, I seek to challenge preconceptions and offer new perspectives, inviting viewers to reconsider and engage with the complexities of time, space, and the human experience.

Construction In Progress
By Onnzai Thong
In this sprawling industrial city I find inspiration from buildings under construction. To destroy or disassemble the existing picture or thing, reassemble or organize it. It’s like destroying an old building and rebuilding it. From the beginning to the end of the process, slowly forming a unique vision. The fishing line symbolizes invisible protection, and the iron net symbolizes the supports in the building, supporting the existence of the structure as whole, firmly surrounding and protecting a warm and comfortable utopia. Different materials reflect the meaning of abundance and existence, redefining and considering the value of the original object.
